Shelly Kelly received her PhD from the University of
Washington in 1999. She is currently an assistant physicist in the Molecular
Environmental Science Group of the BioSciences Division of Argonne
National Laboratory. Kelly has focused her research on the valence state and
chemical speciation of contaminants in biogeochemical systems as revealed by
synchrotron x-ray techniques with emphasis on extended x-ray absorption fine
structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Her recent interests include the interaction of
uranyl with calcium and carbonate in solution, the incorporation mechanism of
U(VI) in to the crystallographic structure of calcite, and the interaction of
U(VI) with microbial exudates.
